Weimaraner lifespan

Hi there,
maybe I'm getting paranoid as I grow older myself, but I guess I'm looking for crumbs of comfort from Weimaraner owners out there wherever you are. My two Weims (brother and sister) will be 13yrs old in February 2008 and that apparently converts to 91yrs old in equivalent human years. I try not to think too much about it as they are both doing quite well health wise at the moment with the aid of supplements. But I do kinda worry about how much longer I will have them as the breed average age is apparently 10 - 12yrs. I'd like to know if there are any healthy Weims out there around 15yrs old?
If you are interested in this topic please visit my site at http://www.weimaranerlife.com/
regards
David

Hi Dave,
I just recently came across your blog while searching for information on the life span of the Weimaraner. I have a large male named Tiberius, that just turned 10 last month. I know he's at the age where anything could happen at any time. He's pretty healthy but like you, I've been getting paranoid about when this will happen or how much longer will we have with our old friend. During my search I've learned that the life span of the Weimaraner can by anywhere from 9 to 15 years. I hope that's true because it will be a sad day when we have to say goodbye to the old guy. I truly hope that when you read this message that your two Weimaraners are still with you, alive and well, in that your blog was written excatly on year ago. I'd be interested to hear back from you with any additional information you may have to offer on this subject.

Thanks,
Collette

We had a Weimaraner, Gomer. He was simply "the greatest dog". He was always around my children before they could walk until they reached high school. We live in the country in Joshua TX and didn't lock our doors because of him. I traveled and had no fear of my families protection with Gomer at the house. I met his parents, which were Silver Weimaraners but Gomer was pure Chocolate. He was 15/16 when he passed. I have not known a more intelligent, humble, loyal breed. They tend to get stubborn, but respectful, in their old age and should be given the respect and additional privileges they take, and deserve. All his life he wasn't allowed on the furniture but the medium and small dogs were. At about 13 he decided that was long enough, and we didn't begrudge him that right. He did always sneak a bit of anything he could reach if unattended but was so ashamed if he was caught. We have since been blessed with a reverse brindle Boxer (our second Boxer) but I lament the loss of Gomer frequently. If you have an opportunity to get one of these regal animals jump at it. As for us, we waited until the good lord put another big male dog in front of us. It happened to be our Boxer "Vader".

My Weimer(KT) . passed away on 12/30/2012. She was healthy for most of her life and got stomach cancer in Novemember. She was a little over 16 y/o when she died. We had to put her to sleep. Toughest decision ever. She had a mass in her stomach liver and instestines. She lived a long healthy life. Love your dogs treat them well and they will be around. Weimers are tough awesome dogs. I really miss mine!

Our Weimie, Sherman, is 16 years old. Other than a large tumor growing on his belly, he is doing incredibly well. Still acts like a puppy when it's time to eat of go on walks. I know we will probably lose him soon, but we've been saying that for the last 5 years!

Hello!
Our beloved Weimaraner Ilsa turned 15 on May 26th of this year. She is fairly blind and deaf, but still acts like puppy like when we take her for a walk and she wants a treat. I'm happy to hear so many other people have had long lives with their Weims. Her temperament has always been outstanding, and she is a favorite with our friends and vet. My son just said he hopes she lives forever, and I agree! We've had her since she was 3 months old, and essentially the entire time we have lived in our house. I can't imagine life without her!

We have had Mancha and Canella for 13 years. We were looking for one, found two sisters, and brought them to our large beach property in Costa Rica. They took it over and took over our hearts as well. Soon there was Bruin, a male who needed to be adopted and soon thereafter was a litter of pups and Cafe whom we kept. Three more litters later, a new breed of dogs on the beach in the area and we have had an amazing time with all of them. We lost the males a few years ago to Erlichia, (canine tick disease) and were told the ladies had six months to live. That was four years ago and sadly, although we have been blessed with every extra day with them, I fear our time with the girls is coming to a quick end. The quality of life is gone, there is no control of bowels at times and one is almost crippled from a life long battle with bone cycsts and tumors. My babies are about leave me and I am devastated. The most amazing creatures ever in my life, our lives. We have five more here, each a different breed and love of ours, but Mancha and Cannella were my first babies. The ones who taught me the love of dog. 13 years of love. Many have said they have held on this long because of love. They have lived an amazing life, given us so much, kept our house safe, played with every child, welcomed every new dog we have brought home, and never left our sides. Best dogs ever. Cristal Azul in Costa Rica will always have Weimaraner angels as will my husband, son and I.

I know this post is older but my weim duke will turn 15years old this november 2015. His energy level went from 100 to 10 he is healthy but tired. He will barely make a walk around half a block. He sleeps more lately but his apetite still the same. I noticed he gets sick more often if he drinks or eat too fast. He is beginning to bark more. I dont know how much time i have with him but he is doing as well as he could at his age.

mine just turned 14 years: Cosmo of Stewart Island.
he had started shitting his bed during the night and drips even when he walks inside the house last year December2014. so i really considered putting him down in January this year and now it is nearly November 2015!
I had a holistic vet as a visitor who told me to change his diet from a ready made food-mix to a "homemade" one consisting of 1/3mussels,1/3rice,1/3chickenmince.
in addition he gets a "health-pill" of joint-remedies and two fresh eggs.
I also started walking with Cosmo every morning and evening at a certain time for more than halfanhour.
I can tell you: Cosmo seems to have risen from death bed since I changed diet and routine: he hardly does the leaking during the night or dripping inside: he runs more, he seems happier and more alert.
but i know:
it will be sooner than later, when i have to put him down. i can't decide to ask a vet to give him an injection and take him to town or ask a friend who would shoot him at cosmo's favorite spot on a beach...

Our weim Tango just turned 15 in August. He has severe hip dysplasia and is deaf, but otherwise is hanging on. We lost his best friend, a female dobie, in May and he seems to have gone downhill some since then. He sleeps a lot but will get up and go outside and wander around and then come back in and lay down. He used to be very active and it makes me sad that he's not anymore. It's interesting to read the above posts, and heartening to hear that some have lived to 16 years. I've been really worried about the hip dysplasia...he cannot control his back legs, and when he rises from sleep, no matter what time of day, he struggles to stand and twists in circles and has balance issues. I find myself following him around all the time, either helping to pick him up, or keep him from falling. I love on him constantly.
My husband and I have always had Dobermans, prior to getting this weimeraner, and I can tell you he is the smartest, gentlest dog we have ever had. As he grew up he would amaze us daily with the things he would do and the things he would understand. Not a better dog in the world than our sweet Tango. I'm going to try some of the things you all have recommended and see what happens. So glad to have found this post....you all have made me feel better.

Our Weimaraner is 13 1/2, he has lumps and bumps all over him, is deaf and has poor sight but he is the loveliest dog I could ever dream of. Yes he's sleeping more now and often drags his feet, he can't manage steps very well and can't go for walks for long but he's plodding on one day at a time. He's an old man content in front of the fire. We will miss him incredibly when he goes. Hes the best dog I know with children, a real softie and has never really lived up to the breed standards so as for a life span of 10-12 years I say no, he says no. He's happy as he is with his loving family, a fire and a padded bed.

Hi, my beautiful Maya who is a pure bread weimeranner is currently 15.8 years old. I'm sad to say that her days are numbered as she is declining now and my heart is broken. My vet told me yesterday that she has never had one over 13 years, she was also amazed that her blood work was perfect. She is simply dying of old age. I currently have a 2nd one Kami which is now 10 years old.

Our Bo is 14.5 years old. He is bow-legged, pretty blind and deaf but still playful. He still loves to chase a tennis ball (although he can't find it withour help) and still greets you everyday with the full body wiggle. He still lives to go on walks although they sometimes last only 4-5 houses. He's a good boy, our kids are 15 and 14 and they only know life with Bo, so it makes me sad to think of our home without him, but we are blessed to have shared this much joy together. His appetite is still strong as ever (he has a weird obsession with citrus, oranges and tangerines and eats yellow pear tomoatos off the vine) and I know when his appetite goes, it will be a sign, so we love up on him everyday. Fun to watch him sunbathe on the patio during the summer.

She no longer god for a walk but follows us around the house all day long and seems very happy.....another one who has most definitely not lost her appetite and her desire to steal/do anything for a treat. The most amazing dog ever !!

My Rosie dog is now 14. She has the tumors on her back and her chest. She is the best dog I have ever had the privilege of being part of my family. But she has lost her appetite and is now more inactive. I know the days are numbered for her, and it breaks my heart. I sure wish I had more time with her.

Our Sophie is 14. She has bumps, poor eyesight, and drags her feet a bit, but she still manages to chatter her teeth when she gets excited, wiggle her nub, and let us know when she needs something. Her appetite comes and goes. She is still a love and a beautiful Weimaraner.

Our beautiful Greta will be 14 soon, she takes medication for her heart but overall is doing well! She drags her back paws a little, is mainly deaf and has lost significant muscle mass since the heart condition was discovered, I feel like she's happy and carefree still and loves this new mellow life.

my weim is ten years old now and a great companion
Don't know what I will do without him
Lately he has began having seizure problems despite being on heavy medications
Just wondering if anyone else is having these issues as all blood work is normal and just had a normal mri performed
Epilepsy was the probable cause
Other than numberous fatty tumors he is otherwise ok

Hello. It is wonderful to hear so many great weim stories. We have a 13 1/2 year old that still thinks she is a puppy - she does not know she is going def and her hips can't hold her up anymore and still runs around like she is 2. She has many lumps and bumps and has a recently had an aggressive tumor growing on her shoulder. She is an inspiration for me to get up and do something still! It is a matter of time yes, but as long as she still thinks she is a puppy we will enjoy our time with her - it is great to hear that so many weims have lived so long!

Our baby boy Delmar will be 15 on December 9th, 2016. He is puppyish and adorable in his old age. He plays with his toys and my husband and I spoil him and kiss on him constantly. He has thrived on good food from Chewy.com and supplements like Nzymes and Hawthorne berry, etc. I wish I would have began my research on canine life extension years ago. I feel like I cost myself precious time with him out of ignorance but be encouraged, feed good food, no grain, fresh fruit and vegetables (read which ones to avoid) and no sodium fresh meats, fresh water, indoor living as you would treat a child. They are not a normal canine, and as such shouldn't be treated like a dog. It breaks my heart to see what America has done to nearly destroy this breed, so educate others and preach spay/neuter. May God bless all you precious Weim parents out there. A happy, long life is a reality with plenty of love and attention. Remember, your Weim feeds of of you too.So tell them every day how much you need them and how beautiful and healthy they are.

My boy Ghostie is getting ready to turn 10 on May 1. He still thinks he is a puppy and he wrestles with our foster pebble every day. He loves walks and hikes. He has something that is causing a limp on his front left paw. We can't seem to replicate it my touch or range of motion exercises. We found a small lump in the "wrist" area just behind the foot, but he does not react upon palpation. Our best guess is that he injured a tendon or something and it was healing slowly. He is an incredibly active dog and he just won't let it heal...(we guess). He did 2 weeks on Rimadyl and it went away, but less than 2 weeks off of the meds, and he is limping. There's never a whimper, or a complaint...just a limp.
Funny note... Last year he had a skin tag start growing uncontrollably. We had the vet see him and they decided to remove it and test it. They took off some smaller skin tags as well. When we got the biopsy back, the Dr. called and told me he had good news and weird news. The good news was that everything was benign. The weird news was that the big growth was actually a type of growth called a histiocytoma which he has never seen in an adult dog...only in puppies (as their immune systems kick in).
I looked at the Dr. plainly and told him "shhh. don't tell ghostie he's not a puppy anymore".

Anyways, I too dread the day that I lose my Ghostie. He and I have been through some rough stuff together and I can't really imagine facing life's "stuff" without him.

Hug your weimies!

I love hearing so many stories of Weimy love. Our girl Rizzo is 13 years 7 months. She's got the same lump & bumps others talk about and in the last month she's had difficulty jumping into our bed but she's still going strong; she may nap a bit more often but she still loves walks & romps in the yard and is just as sweet as she's always been. It makes my heart happy hearing about all these Weims with long lives

My girl Neikka is approximately 14. She was a rescue dog and we have had her 7 years. She is the smartest, sweetest dog. A vet once told us we won the lottery with her, because she is the best behaved Weim he's ever seen. Having 3 boys, she is the baby girl our house never had and she is so spoiled like it too. She has the lumps and skin tags all over her. Her eye sight and hearing are definitely almost gone. Her appetite has always been hit and miss. She's on a grain free diet, but her teeth were bad when she got to us. She is a big bad hunter, even without her eyes. She does laps and wiggles and jumps every time we come home, but she loves sleeping all day, evening, and night. She started having some accidents the past couple months. And she stopped eating 2 days ago. Last night she started puking up water. Throughout the day today she has stopped opening her eyes and lifting her head. In the last couple hours her breathing has become labored. As soon as her daddy gets home to say good, we are going to be forced to say our final goodbye. I am so not ready to lose her. She was doing great 2 days ago. It's like someone flipped a switch. I was never a "dog person" before my baby girl. I don't know if I can ever be again. There is no replacing Neikka.

Ares just turned 13. We got him at 9 weeks old. He is a great dog, and adores his family...To include the newly joined cat. Last year, his tumors were so bad, the vet recommended surgery. 7 lbs of tumors removed, and they missed one of the largest on his front quarters. Recovery was a nightmare, he had to be resutured 4 times. We couldn't bring ourselves to put our poor baby through that misery again. So, here we are. He seems relatively healthy. He has a healthy appetite, but seems to forget that he just ate and will beg to be fed again...He is an ice cube junky of epic proportions! He falls slot... He struggles to get on the couch now, and to stand up from lying down. I know he's 13, but after being the red headed step child for the last couple of years with a growing family...I'm so scared of losing my first. So, I bathe him, and wrap him in warm towels...And let him lay in my lap like a baby. I can't stand the thought of what's to come.

I'm sad, and scared.

Our beloved Bailey lived to be 11.2. He had a lot of lumps and maybe tumors that slowed him down the last couple of years. He never lost the weimaraner personality and love for his family. He had a appetite for everything and loved sleeping all day on the bed, but always got up to greet the family. Our first weimer lived to be 9 and we are so blessed to have Bailey for as long as we did. It happened pretty fast and we knew his quality of live was ending. Bailey walked out of the house with dignity and honor and had it all the way to the end. It helps to know how much we love our weimaraner and its devastating when we lose them. We will never forget Bailey as he will always be a part of our family. My heart will hurt for a long time after losing him, but he has filled it with love and a life time of memories.

Our Daisy girl will turn 16 on July 5th, 2017. She was in good health until February 2016 when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We decided not to do an MRI to confirm and treated her with prednisone and tramadol. After a few months we realised it was not a brain tumor but most likely a stroke and have continued with same treatment for her spinal stenosis. She mostly recovered but her spinal stenosis has gotten progressively worse and her back end is very weak. She still gets around ok, eats good and still wags her tail. She doesn't have total control over her bowels but we have developed a great system with washable mats and lots of scrap blankets! We love her dearly. She has brought so much joy to our lives. She has can still see ok but her hearing is not great. Our vet says she is the oldest Weimar she has ever treated.

Leanna Larson said...

What happened? Mine is almost 13. The vet says she has a spinalcord issue. She is falling quite frequently. They say she is in no pain. She is eating and naughty as ever. The issue is just that it is going to get worse. I don't want to come home and find that she fell down the stairs, so trying to decide how to proceed.

The Silver Dog said...

Hi Leanna, Daisy is still with us and will be 16 on July 5th. She has been dealing with this spinal issue now for quite a while, diagnosed about a year and half ago when she was 14. We never dreamed she would make it to 15 and now 16!!! The vet has treated her with prednisone to keep the swelling down around her spinal cord and tramadol for pain. She has progressively gotten worse over time and falls a good bit, her rear end slips out from underneath her. We have rugs all over the house to help with her traction. I have worried for so long that she will fall and break something while we are not there. We have 3 steps between the house and garage, which she must navigate to get outside. But she has always been able to get up after she falls. The prednisone has probably kept her alive keeping the swelling off her spinal cord and keeping her mobile, but the medicine has also caused her muscles to waste. She is thin but has a very healthy appetite. It is a quality of life question, we feel as long as she still can get up, and is eating, wagging her tail she still has a decent quality of life.

Velcro dogs
Our old weinmaraner is 15 years in August. He has been our Velcro dog since we first bought him at 3 months old. He follows us everywhere and now in his twilight years he still wants to be close to us wherever we go. He is covered in lumps n bumps, his sense of direction is poor, his hearing is nearly gone and he dribbles front and back. Even with all these issues, he keeps going and going, my friends call him Duracell dog. His back legs are weak and he finds walks an issue so they are few and far between. We know he is coming to the end, he spends most of his days sleeping in his big padded bed or infront of the AGA. He has been the most special loved dog we could of ever wanted I love this breed, they are loyal, protective and 1 in a million, they will always be your best friend. Iv massaged his achy arthritic spots and given him green lipped mussel in powder form for the last 4 years at the onset of his troubles. I believe these to be miracle tablets as they've kept him going when we have thought his time was up. We have a female Weinmaraner who is 9 and she is the he same in temperament, sadly she has just started to get the lumps. Cherish and enjoy these special friends they are so unique and intelligent. They are so in tune with human kind. When the time comes for my old man to leave this world I will know he has had the best time on earth. Until that time comes upon us we will continue to give him the best life until his last breath , he will be loved and cherished forever.

My weim Casper is 12 and I’ve been worrying about the same thing - particularly with annoying family members constantly saying time is running out. Apart from a bit of struggle with his back legs after a walk or a long sleep (who doesn’t have that issue?!) he is one happy and healthy dog with a big appetite, still a need to pull me on long walks, and still taking any chance he can to play tug of war. I shall be sharing this post with said family members and going to sleep very happily tonight. Love love love Weimaraners - they are an amazing breed and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stopped by people to say how handsome Casper is and what a stunning dog he is.

My heart goes out to all of you who have a lost a beloved pet. Ripley is our Weim and she is 9 and doing very well overall. She loves to play with our German Short hair, Winnie who is 2.5 years old. Winnie stopped Ripley from lounging in our bed all day! Ripley has started with some lumps that we will have checked out soon. Her bloodwork came back good. I'm really afraid to lose Her! I am her favorite and her loyalty goes beyond any dog I have had. She has been such a character over the years and somewhat stubborn, but we still adore her. She has the sweetest personality and loves company, but she acts like a fierce guard dog when she sees people walking by, or when the UPS man comes by! Ripley has slowed down a little bit, but is more stubborn. She's picky about her food, her blankets, and so many other things! She's a deep thinker! They are so smart! It was fun reading about everybody's dogs!

Jake aka "The Gray Ghost" is our retired special service Weimeraner that used to visit the children at the hospital and nursing homes. Every post for as many years back that I can read describes Jake perfectly. Jake has traveled the world with us and at the age of 13 I cannot imagine life without Jake. He is the most special part of our lives and home and so special that only Weimeraner parents understand. Jake is home all of the time and his last trip next to me on the plane from Miami to Israel was over a year ago and I knew it would be the last one, but the best one. He still finds the strength to go on his car rides and it makes me so happy when he gets up and goes to the door when he sees they car keys and my bag. He has a tumor that is growing and causing kidney problems, but we have been told our time with him was only a few weeks and that was six months ago. He is a big bundle of love that just keeps growing. His health in his older age is the same with being deaf, weak back legs, sleeping, short walks and so on, but mkre special and sweeter every day. I love reading all of the stories about Weimeraners. Thank you.
P. S. WE HAVE A JOKE THAT WE NOW SERVICE JAKE and we are so happy to do so.

My beautiful weimeraner was put to sleep in August. He was just ten years old and was given an immuno suppressant for grass allergy. The capsules had to be shoved down his throat to prevent chewing. They smelt disgusting and could only be given in fasting state so couldn't even mask with food. The capsules cost £400 for one months supply. I administered the tablets for one week and watched as my dog went from vibrant and playful to an old boy whose back legs went and on a drip the last full day of his life. Only then did the vet diagnose genetic diabetes and the capsules instructions state ' not recommended for diabetic dogs.' I am a female, single so on my own with no family to turn to, and my only companion now in a box.
Please don't trust your vet to prescribe without you reading the instructions fully and ask if there is a less risky alternative. One side effect of this capsule is stated online only as 'death' and had I known I would never have allowed it. If you saw the photos of my dog in July you would never have thought he would not be here in August 2018. He too had lots of fatty lumps but they were not a problem. I was taking him for walks in the countryside just a week before he took this capsule.
Please please know that medication can save lives but they can take them too- CHECK always fully CHECK what your pet has been prescribed.
I'm heartbroken and cannot replace my pet due to circumstances not least a £2000 vet bill to clear.

Just list my weim, Jeannie, two weeks ago. Just over 18!

My Weim will be turning 15 in May of this year. Crazy how the time flies, going to miss him so much. He has hip issues, hearing and seeing issues, drags back legs, but we still do short walks. Going to go take him on one now :)

it's so fantastic and important to have this forum. None of us should feel we ever go through a long goodbye alone, or that we are singled out for it. As I read every one of these messages from all of you, I hear diligence, devotion, and compassion. As we all know Weims respond so well to love and attention. My first Weim Yeager lived to just 16. He didn't want to go but his body was just ancient. He died naturally, at home in his favorite chair in my arms. I was prepared for it. Now, my Hudson who is 13 years old and 3 months is thriving. I can't understand it - happily so. His energy is intense, he runs like the wind, aerodynamic on a mission to nowhere. We track a minimum of three miles a day. Simply by virtue of how long he has been on the planet, I was gripped today by the inevitable loss and it has hit me so hard. Yet reading that Weims have been recorded as living up to 18 gives me comfort. He has zero health issues. I have not had to bring him to a vet in about four years. He just keeps going. I have a theory. I work at home and usually under intense deadlines. Except for going to the gym or occasionally out at night with friends, we are in one another's presence about 22 out of 24 hours, day after day, week after week, month after month. I hope I don't jinx anything by writing this and I know I have sacrificed much of my free time to be with him but that is a conscious choice very gleefully made. I bring him everywhere I can. I believe that Weims are so unique in their need for human companionship and that Hudson has been able to live without any anxiety - and that is the reason for his amazing health. I send every one of you my warmest love and support and regards. Every Dog is sacred. I love every Dog I meet.

Our Gracie Mae is 14 and it's time. She is having trouble walking, especially getting up from her never ending naps. We can tell her hips are really bothering her. She has cataracts and can barely hear now. She walks in to things quite often. As well being covered in the fatty tumorous lumps all over her body, although she has never been overweight. It is hard to watch but at what point does it become selfish to keep them alive? She tries to get excited and chase after our little schnauzer but just can't. It is more heartbreaking to know her mind is right but her body is just failing her. My husband can hardly let go and I don't know how to ease the process.

We had the same situation with our Bailey Boy. I just looked him in the eye's and he let me know when it was time. There is no easy way, but there is peace knowing you did the right thing for her.

My Weimaraner Misty passed away yesterday night at 12 and a half. I have loved reading this thread and hearing about all the other old weims that still loved walks right up until the end. Mine was just like that. She was still running across the yard after rabbits and rolling in anything stinky she could find up until the evening before her death. Her death came as a bit of a shock since even though she was older she had no health issues except for some arthritis in her back legs. I am comforted only knowing that she did not suffer and was able to pass peacefully in her favorite nap spot.

My Weim, Gunner is 14. He is the most loving and gentle dog. Last year he was involved in a stem cell study for his hips (he needs a double hip replacement). He ended up getting the placebo. But being 14, and a history of trouble with surgeries, we can’t put him through a replacement. We took him to a specialist, and they said he has the worst hip degeneration they have ever seen. His femurs have deteriorated to half the normal size, so basically his legs look tiny and he can hardly stand 😔 When he sits, he topples over backwards. We did injections last week, and somehow, he’s doing amazing! He still can’t sit, but he tries to run and jump! He is covered in fatty lumps, has an autoimmune disease that makes his toenails bleed, and is deaf, but all of his labs come back perfect! He can sleep at night 10 hours without having to be let out! He still loves life, and just keeps plugging along. I don’t know how much time we have left with him, but as long as his eyes tell me he’s ok, we will enjoy him!

Today, we lost our beloved Noodles to age 13/14. We got her as a rescue when she was 4 years old. She was a beautiful Weim. Great with the cats and grandkids. She loved everyone she met and on more than one occasion had to coax her out of a UPS van.
She will be dearly missed. Goodnight, sweetheart.

We had to say goodbye to Scout today. He was my best friend and I'm heartbroken. I met him at 6 weeks old and he left us today at 16 years + after a long fight with cancer. He had a great life right up until the end. I ended up at this page a number of times in the last few years and have found solace in reading everyone's experiences with their weims. Love them while you can.
