He had a great life right up until the end. I ended up at this page a number of times in the last few years and have found solace in reading everyone's experiences with their weims. He ended up getting the placebo. But being 14, and a history of trouble with surgeries, we can’t put him through a replacement. We took him to a specialist, and they said he has the worst hip degeneration they have ever seen. His femurs have deteriorated to half the normal size, so basically his legs look tiny and he can hardly stand 😔 When he sits, he topples over backwards. We did injections last week, and somehow, he’s doing amazing! He still can’t sit, but he tries to run and jump! He is covered in fatty lumps, has an autoimmune disease that makes his toenails bleed, and is deaf, but all of his labs come back perfect! He can sleep at night 10 hours without having to be let out! He still loves life, and just keeps plugging along. I don’t know how much time we have left with him, but as long as his eyes tell me he’s ok, we will enjoy him! I have loved reading this thread and hearing about all the other old weims that still loved walks right up until the end. Mine was just like that. She was still running across the yard after rabbits and rolling in anything stinky she could find up until the evening before her death. Her death came as a bit of a shock since even though she was older she had no health issues except for some arthritis in her back legs. I am comforted only knowing that she did not suffer and was able to pass peacefully in her favorite nap spot.Tabithahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17457786100227064124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523169541524111454.post-6174384652879735352019-08-21T11:16:10.409-07:002019-08-21T11:16:10.409-07:00We had the same situation with our Bailey Boy. She has cataracts and can barely hear now. She walks in to things quite often. As well being covered in the fatty tumorous lumps all over her body, although she has never been overweight. It is hard to watch but at what point does it become selfish to keep them alive? She tries to get excited and chase after our little schnauzer but just can't. It is more heartbreaking to know her mind is right but her body is just failing her. My husband can hardly let go and I don't know how to ease the process. None of us should feel we ever go through a long goodbye alone, or that we are singled out for it. As I read every one of these messages from all of you, I hear diligence, devotion, and compassion. As we all know Weims respond so well to love and attention. My first Weim Yeager lived to just 16. He didn't want to go but his body was just ancient. He died naturally, at home in his favorite chair in my arms. I was prepared for it. Now, my Hudson who is 13 years old and 3 months is thriving. I can't understand it - happily so. His energy is intense, he runs like the wind, aerodynamic on a mission to nowhere. We track a minimum of three miles a day. Simply by virtue of how long he has been on the planet, I was gripped today by the inevitable loss and it has hit me so hard. Yet reading that Weims have been recorded as living up to 18 gives me comfort. He has zero health issues. I have not had to bring him to a vet in about four years. He just keeps going. I have a theory. I work at home and usually under intense deadlines. Except for going to the gym or occasionally out at night with friends, we are in one another's presence about 22 out of 24 hours, day after day, week after week, month after month. I hope I don't jinx anything by writing this and I know I have sacrificed much of my free time to be with him but that is a conscious choice very gleefully made. I bring him everywhere I can. I believe that Weims are so unique in their need for human companionship and that Hudson has been able to live without any anxiety - and that is the reason for his amazing health. I send every one of you my warmest love and support and regards. Every Dog is sacred. I love every Dog I meet.
C. He was just ten years old and was given an immuno suppressant for grass allergy. The capsules had to be shoved down his throat to prevent chewing. They smelt disgusting and could only be given in fasting state so couldn't even mask with food. The capsules cost £400 for one months supply. I administered the tablets for one week and watched as my dog went from vibrant and playful to an old boy whose back legs went and on a drip the last full day of his life. Only then did the vet diagnose genetic diabetes and the capsules instructions state ' not recommended for diabetic dogs.' I am a female, single so on my own with no family to turn to, and my only companion now in a box.
Please don't trust your vet to prescribe without you reading the instructions fully and ask if there is a less risky alternative. One side effect of this capsule is stated online only as 'death' and had I known I would never have allowed it. If you saw the photos of my dog in July you would never have thought he would not be here in August 2018. He too had lots of fatty lumps but they were not a problem. I was taking him for walks in the countryside just a week before he took this capsule.
Please please know that medication can save lives but they can take them too- CHECK always fully CHECK what your pet has been prescribed.
I'm heartbroken and cannot replace my pet due to circumstances not least a £2000 vet bill to clear.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06006337796716315999noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523169541524111454.post-57951503425358669972018-09-06T05:11:59.076-07:002018-09-06T05:11:59.076-07:00Jake aka "The Gray Ghost" is our retired...Jake aka "The Gray Ghost" is our retired special service Weimeraner that used to visit the children at the hospital and nursing homes. Every post for as many years back that I can read describes Jake perfectly. Jake has traveled the world with us and at the age of 13 I cannot imagine life without Jake. He is the most special part of our lives and home and so special that only Weimeraner parents understand. Jake is home all of the time and his last trip next to me on the plane from Miami to Israel was over a year ago and I knew it would be the last one, but the best one. He still finds the strength to go on his car rides and it makes me so happy when he gets up and goes to the door when he sees they car keys and my bag. He has a tumor that is growing and causing kidney problems, but we have been told our time with him was only a few weeks and that was six months ago. He is a big bundle of love that just keeps growing. His health in his older age is the same with being deaf, weak back legs, sleeping, short walks and so on, but mkre special and sweeter every day. I love reading all of the stories about Weimeraners. Thank you.
P. S. WE HAVE A JOKE THAT WE NOW SERVICE JAKE and we are so happy to do so. Ripley is our Weim and she is 9 and doing very well overall. She loves to play with our German Short hair, Winnie who is 2.5 years old. Winnie stopped Ripley from lounging in our bed all day! Ripley has started with some lumps that we will have checked out soon. Her bloodwork came back good. I'm really afraid to lose Her! I am her favorite and her loyalty goes beyond any dog I have had. She has been such a character over the years and somewhat stubborn, but we still adore her. She has the sweetest personality and loves company, but she acts like a fierce guard dog when she sees people walking by, or when the UPS man comes by! Ripley has slowed down a little bit, but is more stubborn. She's picky about her food, her blankets, and so many other things! She's a deep thinker! They are so smart!
